The examiner will process the applicant and administer a vision and written exam. If the applicant is paying with a credit card, the permit can be printed at the DPS location. If the applicant is paying with cash or money order, the examiner will issue a form that is taken to a tag agency where they will pay the fee and get the permit printed. Applicants also have the option of taking the written test at a Career Tech Testing Center.

Payments can be made with Visa, Mastercard or Discover credit or debit cards. No cash or checks are accepted. Applicants for any service must have physical copies of required documents that are official or certified copies. If someone's name is different from the proof of identity provided, they must also provide a legal document showing proof of their name change, like a marriage license, divorce decree or adoption decree.
