This worked fine, no hassle. MC2 is a bit more wierd - I'll double check my config in a couple hours and edit this post with addition info for that one for you. Thus far it runs fine for me. If this doesn't work for you. How do I run it on Windows 7 Home Premium? I know the software on this machine is capable of running it, I just need to know the workaround. Instead you're stuck with either the method I listed above - winXP service Pack 3 using compatibility mode in your properties for the MC2 shortcut with run as admin ticked.
As long as you have a personal copy of Windows XP with serial code, then you're set. But I would heavily suggest retrying all available compatibility modes first with the game folder located on your desktop and a shortcut to that folder also on the desktop - applying the compatibility to the shortcut and also the EXE if you feel it is necessary. Method is as follows: Step 1: open cd up and explore files.
Locate setup file at the bottom of the list, right click, and set compatibility mode to "Windows XP Service Pack 3" and "run as administrator". Don't assume it will actually run as admin - be paranoid, and right click and run as admin.
Step 2: watch as install goes faster than expected. Make sure you get a desktop shortcut, and make sure it is a full install. Step 3: don't start it yet. Repeat process for shortcut. Ignore the fact you checked the run as admin box, right click the shortcut and "run as admin". Step 4: run through initial graphical test and then run as admin again.
Game should run if the above works - you're on the same OS as me, so in theory it should. You'll likely get mouse jitter on the menu, but you can mess with the game graphics settings to fix it.
Run the first mission in the campaign to check. If all goes well it'll run right. Oh yeah - kill the hardware mouse update option in your graphics menu or the mouse flicker will drive you mad if your PC is anything like mine. Btw, terrain textures still suck, no matter what - unless you're lucky, or find a better compatibility mode or something. But you'll have to go to graphics menu to make everything else look awesome. Part of the reason I know there has to be a work around is because I can download the XP program even though it says it wont run.
The way these programs are designed is they upload everything from basic to pro and then only unlock certain levels. Which is why a simple upgrade requires a download to unlock what we weren't allowed to use before. I'll try that step by step as soon as I can. Thank you for taking the time to put it up. Download this very popular utility by clicking on the icon at the bottom of the contents section to the left.
Instructions: This patch enables play on the Internet Gaming Zone and Internet play with foreign language versions. Do not be surprised if in the next multiplayer game you're in, your team-mate's chat looks like it is in a foreign language, because it might be. It also addresses a few minor issues that most people have not and will not encounter, relating to low-end machines. The patch simply replaces the MechCmdr. All you have to do is download it and double click on Update.
It will unzip to your Windows temp directory and run the install from there. This should be a good way to blow your three-day weekend if you don't have plans yet. MechCommander is one of those games I always meant to play when it was released, but more games came out and suddenly I had forgotten about it.
There is nothing like being reminded of a great game that you missed by being told you don't have to pay for it anymore. From the reports online, these games work fine under XP, so you don't have to spend your time tweaking when you should be playing.
