We have changed the physical layout within our facilities and the style of our programs to accommodate physical distancing. Children and teens in our overnight programs will follow a process of a thorough pre-screening prior to arriving at camp, including a required, negative COVID test for all campers.
Any camper or staff member that exhibits symptoms will activate our Covid Response Plan, which will include isolation from our camp population until a negative test is confirmed or removal from camp if COVID or other communicable illness is confirmed. What is the mask policy at camp? Campers and staff will be required to wear face masks that cover the nose and mouth at all times, except when outdoors, or when they eat, sleep, bath, or swim.
Windows and fans will be utilized in cabins to increase air flow. Please send an approved mask [gators, bandanas, and masks with valves are not allowed] for each day your camper will be in the program. Resident Camp Ohana Groups - one cabin each - are composed of up to 8 campers and trained counselors. Day Camp Ohana Groups are composed of up to 12 campers and trained counselors. If we are notified of exposure within an Ohana Group cohort, we will notify families of all affected group members and quarantine exposed campers where appropriate.
We will assess the situation on a case-by-case basis and work with our local public health officials to take next steps. Our priority is keeping our campers, families and staff safe. We will follow the latest protocol from the CDC, state and county, and make decisions accordingly.
We head to Kohala, where we will learn about the importance of the canoe in the local communities. Much in the way that the hula is not just a dance, canoes are not just boats in Hawaiian culture. Polynesian voyagers first discovered the Hawaiian islands, and canoes played a key role in the flourishing of Hawaiian life. We learn how canoes were an important part of everyday life, especially for traveling and fishing, and how locals are still heavily involved in canoe voyaging clubs. We are very lucky to be able to spend some time in this area of Hawaii.
This hands-on non-profit was founded for research and educational purposes to discover and understand how Hawaiians sustained rain-fed intensive farming for centuries; and how it may inform our current efforts to live sustainably. Time to test our newfound skills on a surfboard maybe or just catch up on rest and reflection after what has been an incredible 4 week adventure in Hawaii.
Being up close with these gentle creatures is the experience of a lifetime. Sadly, the time has come to begin processing the epic experiences that the last 30 days have taken us on. We are sure that you will reflect on how amazing it was to have a chance to take a break from everything, learn about ourselves, but also prioritize time to experience and have gratitude for our own beautiful and historic culture and environment.
Medium Activity Level: Anyone with an average fitness level and an enthusiasm for the outdoors and new experiences will have a great time on this summer program! You will need to be prepared for some physical work during the volunteer projects on the program, like trail building or the removal of invasive plants.
High Camping Level: Be prepared to spend some time out in nature. You'll love the experience of camping, staring at the camp fire, breathing in fresh air and stargazing the night away. High Service Learning Level: You will be able to make a big difference to the local community during your stay.
Be prepared to get your hands dirty and do some hands-on learning about local issues. Our accommodation will be a mix of camping tents supplied and comfortable, clean hostels and lodges.
